Here are five overlooked but very beneficial foods you should try to work into your diet.
1. Sardines for the heart
Ounce for ounce sardines are one of the best sources for omega-3 fatty acids which are considered very heart healthy. Canned versions are inexpensive and easily stored. Choose unsalted and keep the bones in for an excellant source of calcium.
2. Brazil Nuts for prostrate health
Brazil nuts are one of the richest sources of selenium which is considered powerful in redcuing risk of prostrate cancer in men. Be careful though as selenium can be toxic if taken in larger quantities. Only a couple of Brazil nuts a day will get you all you need.
3. Edamame for your mood
Fiber-rich carbohydrates such as oates or edamame (green soybeans in the pod) help prevent mood fluctuations by keeping your blood sugar levels steady. Edamame also contain protein and omega-3 fatty acids. You can find them at any Japanese restaurant or at health food stores.
4. Bluberries for memory
Blueberries contain flavonoids, which give them their color. Flavonoids are natural compounds that protect the brain's memory carrying cells (neurons) from the negative effects of oxidation and inflammation.
5. Lentils for energy
Rich in ficer and protein, lentils provide an excellent source of energy. They also are a good source of several B vitamins as well as iron.
